McKenzie at Silver Creek Landing

Silver Creek Landing, located on the McKenzie River near Nimrod offers anglers a picturesque fishing experience with opportunities to catch trout and steelhead in a scenic setting. This unimproved launch provides access for both bank and boat anglers, serving as a popular spot along the river’s 42-mile stretch of Class II and III rapids.

Access and Facilities
Silver Creek Landing provides a paved boat ramp suitable for launching drift boats and rafts, as well as bank access for anglers. The site has been minimally restored following the 2020 wildfires, with the primary focus on maintaining the boat launch. 

Fishing Techniques
Effective methods include fly fishing with nymphs and dry flies, as well as using spinners or bait where regulations permit. Drift fishing from boats is popular in this area.

Regulations
Anglers should consult the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s regulations for specific rules, including seasonal closures and catch limits. Notably, all wild trout must be released, and certain sections may have bait restrictions. 

Safety Considerations
The McKenzie River can have swift currents and cold water temperatures. Anglers should exercise caution, wear appropriate gear, and be aware of changing water conditions.

Access Points and Launch Details

Silver Creek Landing provides a paved boat ramp for easy vehicle access from Highway 126, located approximately 3 miles west of Nimrod. The site features:

  • A public boat launch suitable for both motorized and non-motorized watercraft
  • A short walking trail leading to a wooden viewing platform overlooking the McKenzie River
  • Interpretive and informative signs throughout the area
  • Limited bank access for anglers, primarily upstream of the launch

The landing serves as a convenient put-in or take-out point for drift boat fishing trips and recreational floats. It’s situated at mile 4.3 of a popular 10-mile rafting and kayaking stretch between Finn Rock Boat Landing and Prince Helfrich Boat Ramp. Anglers and boaters should be aware of Brown’s Hole, a Class III- rapid located about 3 miles downstream that can potentially flip rafts.

Fish Species: Trout and Steelhead

The McKenzie River near Silver Creek Landing is home to a diverse population of fish, with trout and steelhead being the primary targets for anglers. The river supports:

  • Wild and hatchery rainbow trout, known locally as “redsides” for their vibrant coloration
  • Native cutthroat trout
  • Spring Chinook salmon (seasonal runs)
  • Summer steelhead

The river is heavily stocked with rainbow trout from the Leaburg Fish Hatchery, providing ample opportunities for catch-and-keep fishing. Wild trout populations thrive in the lower reaches, particularly from Hendricks Bridge downstream. Anglers should note that all wild trout must be released, and regulations vary depending on the section of the river and time of year. The best fishing for larger wild trout is typically in the lower reaches closest to Eugene and Springfield, including the popular Hayden Bridge area.
