Port of Siuslaw

The Port of Siuslaw in Florence offers a diverse and rich fishing experience, nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Siuslaw River. Siuslaw River Salmon Runs

The Siuslaw River is renowned for its robust salmon runs, particularly Chinook (king) salmon. The fall Chinook run typically begins in August, peaks in September and October, and can extend into early November. During better years, the river system can yield harvests of 3,000 to 5,000 big kings. Coho (silver) salmon also run in the Siuslaw, usually arriving later than Chinook, with the best fishing opportunities from late September through December.

  • Best fishing locations: Lower bay near Florence, tidewater up to Mapleton
  • Popular methods: Trolling with bait or spinners in the bay, bobber and bait fishing in upper tidewater
  • Access points: Public launches in Florence, Cushman, Tiernan, and Mapleton

Fall Chinook Migration Patterns

The fall Chinook salmon migration in the Siuslaw River follows a predictable pattern, influenced by environmental factors and the river’s unique characteristics. These prized fish typically begin entering the river system in August, with numbers increasing significantly by mid-September. The migration continues through October and can extend into early November, providing anglers with ample opportunities for a successful catch.

  • Early arrivals: First Chinook appear in the bay off Florence by August
  • Peak migration: Mid-September through October
  • Migration route: From the bay, through tidewater, up to Mapleton and beyond
  • Factors influencing movement: Water temperature, rainfall, and river levels

As the season progresses, the salmon move further upstream. Initially concentrated in the lower bay near Florence, they gradually advance through the long tidewater section up to Mapleton. Heavier rainfall in late September or early October often triggers bright Chinook to push above tidewater, with the best fishing in the lower river, especially below the confluence of Lake Creek at Swisshome. This migration pattern offers diverse fishing opportunities along the river, from trolling in the bay to bobber fishing in the upper tidewater and eventually drift fishing in the free-flowing sections.

FLORENCE

Surf Perch at South Jetty

The South Jetty area near Florence offers excellent opportunities for surf perch fishing, particularly for redtail surfperch. The best spot is just south of the South Jetty of the Siuslaw River, accessed through the Oregon Dunes Recreation Area. This location features deeper water close to shore exposed by later breaking waves, which is ideal for surf perch habitat.

  • Best time: Spring and early summer during spawning season, especially on incoming tides 1-2 hours before high tide
  • Gear: 9-11 foot rod, heavy tackle to handle surf, 2-6 ounce pyramid sinker, #4 or #2 hooks
  • Bait: Sand shrimp, marine worms, mole crabs, mussels, or clam necks
  • Technique: Cast out far and wait for nibbles, move frequently using the 5-5 rule (5 casts or 5 minutes before moving)

Anglers should be prepared for changing surf conditions and consider using an ATV or side-by-side to cover more ground if permitted. The area also offers scenic views of the Oregon coast and dunes, making it an enjoyable fishing experience even when catches are slow.
