Trailhead at Royal Terrace Falls

The trailhead for Royal Terrace Falls is located within McDowell Creek Falls County Park, approximately 16 miles east of Lebanon. To reach the trailhead, visitors should take Highway 20 east from Interstate 5 for about 20 miles, then turn left onto McDowell Creek Road and follow the signs for 9 miles to the park entrance. The park offers ample parking and facilities, including restrooms and picnic areas, making it an ideal starting point for hikers. From the trailhead, visitors can access a network of well-maintained trails that lead to several stunning waterfalls, including the 119-foot tiered Royal Terrace Falls, as well as Majestic Falls and Lower McDowell Falls.

Majestic Falls Viewing Platforms

Majestic Falls, a 39-foot cascading waterfall, is one of the highlights of McDowell Creek Falls County Park. The falls can be viewed from multiple vantage points thanks to a well-designed system of viewing platforms and staircases. From the upper parking area, stone steps lead down to a wide platform offering panoramic vistas of the water streaming over the cliff. For a more immersive experience, visitors can descend a series of 69 steps to reach a lower viewing platform and a wooden bridge at the base of the falls. This lower vantage point provides an up-close view of the waterfall’s power and beauty. However, hikers should exercise caution, especially during wet conditions, as the wooden and stone stairs can become slippery. The viewing platforms not only offer spectacular views but also create excellent photo opportunities, making Majestic Falls a popular spot for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Trail Maintenance and Safety Tips

The trails at McDowell Creek Falls County Park are well-maintained and suitable for hikers of various skill levels, including families with small children. However, visitors should be aware of a few safety considerations:

  • There is a broken stair near Majestic Falls that requires caution when navigating.
  • Wooden and stone stairs can become slippery, especially during wet conditions.
  • While the trail is generally good year-round, winter conditions may make some sections challenging due to potential ice on the stairs.
  • Leashed dogs are welcome, but owners should keep them under control on the narrow trails and near water.

For a safe and enjoyable hike, it’s recommended to:

  • Wear appropriate footwear with good traction
  • Bring a map or take a photo of the trailhead map, as there are multiple junctions and parking areas
  • Stay on designated trails and respect any closure signs
  • Carry water and snacks, especially on warmer days

By following these tips, visitors can safely explore the park’s beautiful waterfalls and lush forest scenery.
