Proxy Falls

The Proxy Falls Loop Trail, located in the Three Sisters Wilderness area of the Willamette National Forest, offers hikers a scenic 1.6-mile journey featuring two stunning waterfalls. The trailhead is situated 9 miles east of McKenzie Bridge on Highway 242, providing access to a popular route known for its diverse landscapes, from lush forests to ancient lava flows.

Trail Summary

Trailhead: 9 Miles East of McKenzie Bridge

Length: 1.6 Miles

Elevation: 170 ft. Gain

Difficulty: Easy

Surface Conditions: A Bit Rocky, but Well Maintained

Featured Landmark: Dissappearing Pool

Lava Flow and Vine Maples

The Proxy Falls Loop Trail offers a unique geological and botanical experience as it traverses an old lava flow colonized by vibrant vine maples. This ancient volcanic landscape provides a stark contrast to the surrounding forest, with hardy shrubs like vine maple, chinquapin, and cascara thriving in the rocky terrain. The trail’s journey across this lava field not only showcases the area’s volcanic history but also treats hikers to a spectacular display of fall colors when the vine maples turn brilliant shades of red and orange.

  • Lava flow adds geological interest to the hike
  • Vine maples and other hardy plants have colonized the volcanic rock
  • Stunning fall foliage display, especially from the vine maples
  • Trail offers views of nearby cliffs and peaks from atop the lava field
  • Transition between lava field and dense forest highlights ecological diversity

Upper Proxy Falls Disappearing Pool

Upper Proxy Falls, a 130-foot cascade, features a fascinating natural phenomenon at its base. The water plunges into a mysterious pool with no visible outlet, seemingly disappearing into the earth. This vanishing act is due to the porous lava rock beneath the pool, which allows the water to seep through and continue its journey underground.

  • Pool at the base has no visible stream flowing out
  • Water seeps through porous lava rock into the ground
  • Accessible via a side trail off the main Proxy Falls Loop
  • Surrounded by a cool forest chamber with tall trees
  • Less photogenic than Lower Proxy Falls, but offers a unique geological spectacle
MCKENZIE BRIDGE

Glacially Carved Proxy Creek Canyon

The Proxy Falls area showcases a dramatic landscape shaped by glacial activity during the last ice age. Approximately 20,000 years ago, glaciers descended from the Three Sisters, carving out the White Fork valley and scooping a deep canyon at the bottom of Proxy Creek. This glacial action created the steep cliffs over which Proxy Falls now cascades, with the 225-foot Lower Proxy Falls being the most impressive result of this geological process.

  • Valley carved by glaciers from the Three Sisters about 20,000 years ago
  • Glacial retreat around 6,000 years ago left behind the deep, scooped-out canyon
  • Lower Proxy Falls drops 225 feet over glacially-carved cliffs
  • Hanging valley formation contributes to the falls’ impressive height
  • Subsequent lava flows about 1,500 years ago further shaped the landscape, creating porous ground that allows some streams to flow underground
